-------------------------------------------------------------------
• How do the New Inside Macintosh books correspond to the original Inside
Macintosh Volumes I - VI?
There is not a one-to-one correspondence. In New Inside Macintosh, books are
organized by topic.
For example, in the original Inside Macintosh Volumes I - VI, information about
file handling appears in several different volumes. In New Inside Macintosh,
this information is collected in a single book entitled Inside Macintosh:
Files.
• Does this mean I'll need the original Volumes I- VI until all the NIM books
are out?
Yes it does, or at least until all of the core books have been published. The
core books include:
Overview
Macintosh Toolbox Essentials
Files
Memory
Processes
Imaging
Text
More Macintosh Toolbox
Operating System Utilities
Interapplication Communication
For example, if a programmer were to buy Inside Macintosh: Files and throw out
Inside Macintosh Volume VI, she would also be throwing away vital information
about memory, QuickDraw, Apple events, and so on.
However, keep in mind that information on any particular topic presented in New
Inside Macintosh is more up-to-date, and hence supersedes information on the
same topic found in Inside Macintosh Volumes I - VI.
• What happens to all the Technical Notes? Will Technical Notes continue to
exist?
As appropriate, existing Macintosh technical notes are being incorporated into
New Inside Macintosh. However, some types of information are simply most
suitably expressed in a technical note format. So some of the old technical
notes will continue to exist, and new technical notes will continue to be
written. Check the Technical Notes folder on this Bulletin Board for more
information about technical notes (DSBB: Developer Essentials: Technical
Documentation: Mac Tech Notes).
• If I'm a new Macintosh programmer after August 1992, what should I buy?
Keep in mind that Inside Macintosh Volumes I - VI are on their way to being
obsolete. We recommend that you start with whatever New Inside Macintosh books
are available. Once you've read those, if the information you need has not yet
been published in New Inside Macintosh, we recommend that you borrow the
necessary volume of (old) Inside Macintosh from a friend, colleague, or
library. As a last resort, if you absolutely must purchase one of the Volumes I
- VI, you can find it in a technical bookstore or order it from APDA.
• If I'm a new Macintosh programmer before August 1992, what should I buy?
Keep in mind that Inside Macintosh Volumes I - VI are on their way to being
obsolete. If you can, borrow Inside Macintosh I - VI from a friend, colleague,
or library.
• After I've read the New Inside Macintosh: Overview book, which New Inside
Macintosh book should I read next?
Where you begin will depend on what programming tasks you need to perform. You
will have a better idea of where to begin once you've completed reading the
Overview book; if you're still in doubt, start with the Macintosh Toolbox
Essentials book.
• What is Apple's plan for updating New Inside Macintosh?
As Apple introduces new system software technologies, new books will be written
and added to the New Inside Macintosh collection. When new technologies effect
the contents of existing books, those books will be revised in their entirety.
There will be no more "delta volumes" as Volumes IV, V, and VI were.
Should Apple need to make information available to you while those revisions
are in progress, we will do so through electronic means.
• Will there be a looseleaf version available?
Not at this time. APDA is currently considering making looseleaf editions
available, as they have done for Volumes I - V.
• Is there an electronic version available or planned?
Electronic versions of New Inside Macintosh will be available on the Developer
CD and AppleLink as the paper versions are completed.
• Are the new examples in Pascal or in C?
Examples are in Pascal. However, New Inside Macintosh provides C Summaries as
well as Pascal Summaries.
• Can I order these upcoming books by subscription, or automatically?
No. Because of the variable size and price of the books, this is impractical.
In addition, we anticipate that new technologies will add books to the
collection that we cannot anticipate at this time.
• Where can I get the original Volumes I - VI?
Until December 31, 1992, they will be available through bookstores as they have
been in the past. After that date, order through APDA.
• Do I really need all 15 books?
Possibly not. Some of the books are needed only by programmers doing
specialized tasks. Examples are the Networking, Communications, and QuickTime
books.
• Will Apple ever publish a cross-reference / Index, like the old X-Ref?
Until all 15 volumes are published, this is impractical. Apple is
investigating an electronic version of the index to be published at that time.
An electronic version would be more affordable, easier to distribute, and
easier to modify than a paper version.
• Will Apple be compiling a mailing list of New Inside Macintosh readers?
Yes. Each volume will contain a mail-in card, asking for your name and
address. You need send only one of these cards. Apple will use the resulting
list to inform you of important changes to the books or to Apple technology.
We do not intend to sell this list to outside companies for marketing purposes.
We hope you will send in a card to become part of our list, and keep us
informed of your address changes.
• What's all this going to cost?
The first six New Inside Macintosh books will range in price from $19.95 to
$32.95 each, depending on their page count. Prices for subsequent books will
be established as they are finalized. Check the file "NIM Availability" for
the latest news on pricing.
• Will APDA carry the books? Can I place an advance order?
Yes, APDA will carry all the New Inside Macintosh books. They cannot accept
advance orders until the books are available and in stock. Check the "NIM
Availability" file for the latest news on availability.
